So, it follows, Hall Lane is NOT being closed for four months from march 12th. !

Actually, BB, it's all relevant.
Hall Lane is NOT closed for 4 months.
Ladies Lane is NOT closed for 4 months.
'Access from' Ladies Lane to Hall Lane IS closed for 4 months and vice-versa.
It follows that if someone from Aspull or Westhoughton wanted to go to Hindley Hall Golf Club, they could do so.
If someone from Hindley wanted to go to Hindley Hall Golf Club, they could still do so, by going all the way round and use Hall Lane, which is not going to be closed.

Traffic will be busy on the A58 through Westhoughton.

Gaffer, yes. Correct. And Hindley Station is on Ladies Lane.

Its only each side of the bridge for a limited distance so that work can be carried out on the electrification of the railway line between Lostock Junction and Wigan North Western Stations and the complete closure for two days may mean improvements to the existing bridge or even a new one to allow the electrification wires to have clearance which will not be the case at present.

The same happen on different roads and bridges when thy were electrifying the line from Manchester to Preston.

Some times it is the wording or signage that is wrong. Princess road in Ashton has Signage at the end with the Junction of Gerard St which show Road Closed but it is OPEN for Access to ALDIHow many Aldi customers have drove past the Junction and gone elsewhere because of the wrong signage Has Tonls says only a small area from Ladies lane to Hall lane is shut for access at Hindley Station

I said that the signage at the Princess Road traffic lights was wrong, and a sign saying that the supermarket could be accessed, should have been put there, Tonker disagreed......

In Hindley, yoo used to be able to drive down Highfield Road from Hall Lane and on to Hemfield Road and come out on Makerfield Way at Ince, but council barried it off at both ends.

And you also could drive from Hall Lane past Hindley Hall golf club, and come out on Withington Lane, and be in New Springs, I used to do all those routes regularly, including driving from New Springs to Belle Green Lane, and that went over a hump back bridge across the canal.

All blocked off now

It is the original four brick arch bridge, from when the line opened in the mid 1800s, because four lines used to run through Hindley North Railway Station, the whole lot is being demolished, and replaced with a brand new bridge

Exactly, as when I saw that the bridge was closed altogether for two days, I suspected that it might be a new bridge as it only takes Network Rail that period to remove a old bridge with a new one in two full days of day and night working.

Hope it is slightly wider than the old one!

It is going to take them four months to demolish the old bridge, you can't shift something that size in a weekend, a lot of bricks to be removed, and they have to keep the train's running.

Probably both, some of the time they will need a full line closure, and they are also electrifying the entire length of the line, so they will be doing that at the same time, has well as working on other bridges.

"I said that the signage at the Princess Road traffic lights was wrong, and a sign saying that the supermarket could be accessed, should have been put there, Tonker disagreed......"

I did NOT 'disagree'.

I said, "If you look, although the signage doesn't make it clear, the entry to Aldi, off Princess Road, has been left in place.
The sign says "Road Closed Ahead", which it is closed. Ahead. Not actually there at that spot."

There's a difference between "ROAD CLOSED" and
"ROAD CLOSED AHEAD" !

Or to sum it up in Wiganese , "They could not run a Piss -Up -in a Brewery " 4 month's come on who is getting the Brown Envelopes this time , It's a pity theycould not have the Japanese to do the job ,i hazard a guess a month at the most .

May I suggest you typed in the words "Weekend replacement of a small railway bridge" on You Tube where you will find a video of a similar small bridge being removed and replaced in 36 hours.

The weekend replacement of old brick small railway bridges is happening on a regular basis where overhead electrification is taking place and is done so quick in order to have the minimum disruption to train services and road traffic.

In the case of Hall Lane, the work also involves the renovation of the Hindley Station including the Station building and platforms being extended for the new longer trains.

Similar work at Ince Station/Ince Green Lane will follow.

Some people have not got a clue about the amount of work that is needed to modernise the railways in our country after years of stagnation under nationalisation.

We still had steam locomotives until 1968, even building more steam locomotives while other counties in Europe straight after the war were switching to diesel and electric rolling stock and modernising their railway systems etc.

We have even been behind other countries like France, Germany, Italy, Japan etc in the production of high speed trains which since the introduction of foreign private investment in our country has started to happen.

While other countries got on with it, we as usual have lagged behind and had to put up with the nimby's moaning about any modernisation of our railway system.

A system which in years to come will be needed now that our major roads are getting overcrowded and gridlocked with cars, vans and lorries!

I have to agree OC.Iworked on the railways 60/70 .Beeching saw what needed to happen, maybe too drastic with somethings but it was decided to put freight on the roads even though BR had committed to container transport. When I worked for BR modernisation was going ahead at a fast rate but the powers that be decided to slow it down and in some cases it was stopped, profits were to be made elsewhere.Modernisation is now very costly but unless it is done in a big way the railways will never attract people or freight to use it in large volume.

There is now more freight being moved by rail as a result of the increasing congestion on the motorways which has and is slowing down the delivery of goods and the government stopping the RHA having all its own way like was the case in the past.

Tesco for example even have their own regular freight container service by rail between a FLT terminal at Daventry near Coventry to a railhead between Glasgow and Edinburgh so that goods reach can reach their stores in Scotland quicker than what they can by road.

Well my point i was trying to make was there was section of a major road completely destroyed some 15 kilometers long ,and guess what they moved in and within a couple of months they had the road open and a brand new 15k length constructed ,but in this run-down country it takes forever ,we just don't seem able to plan and carry out what is needed in quick -time . No doubt if the UK was subject to earthquakes in the way Japan is there would be plans funds and resources in place immediately to repair damaged critical infrastructure in a similar fashion.......as it stands we are not likely to see our main roads damaged by earthquakes on the same scale so, there isn't.

Yes, your post was quite different.

My post does not mention the bridge, but the device that speedily places the spans. As such, it follows on from the prior conversation, where GB mentions speed of construction in Japan.

Had I wished to play Bridge with you in this way, I would have offered to trump your post with an account of the The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge/Tunnels system which is over twice as long as the one you have cited. I desisted from doing so, as it is not relevant to the discussion about the speed with which bridges are erected.

As it is already causing a great deal of inconvenience to residents living in the area of not only Hindley, but also Wigan and Westhoughton, surely Wigan and Bolton Councils together with local MP's Lisa Nandy (Labour)and Chris Green (Conservative) be putting pressure on Network Rail about their proposed delay.

Network Rail have a lot of power to do what they want with the railways, these powers are derived from the various railway acts passed by parliament when the railways were being built, it gives them rights of access and other stuff, they do have to consult with local authorities about works which will impact the local area, but basically they do what they want, and it is the same with the utility companies.

I don't think that the Higher Ince Bridge closure and works, will be as long or complex as the Hall Lane Bridge in Hindley, because it has not been mentioned in these topics about how many of the utility services run across the Hall Lane railway bridge, all of them may use that bridge

Water.
Sewerage.
Electricity.
Gas.
Telephone Services.
Cable TV Network.

All if not some of those services will be carried across that bridge, and if that is the case, then all those services will have to be rerouted, so as to keep them connected, and then maybe even put back into the new bridge.

That could not be done in a single weekend Owd Codger.

Only warning people who come on Wigan World that if they are travelling via the M6I and Kearsley to get to Radcliffe by the A667, the road will be closed for ten weeks for railway bridge repairs and the alternative diversion routes will be a longer way around that area than what they are in Wigan with the closure of Hall Lane in Hindley and the future closure of Ince Green Lane.

Hi get the Gricer means a 'Grubby Raincoated Idiot Chasing Engines Relentlessly' but I cannot find a 'gricer' in the membership list. although the name does sound familiar.

Like I said, the name did sound familiar, but it does not show up on my search, and I cannot find it in the members list.

Wrong, the official terminology of a Gricer is a Railway Enthusiast and what a nice set of people we are!

Long may they survive, including the Owd Codger kind

Will some be in my grave as fast?

And while you are at it, look at the postings of Perkin Warbeck and guess who he is now!

If he talks as much rubbish as you do Todge he shouldn’t be too hard to spot.

Perkins Warbeck’s brother has been known to post on here. Both good posters.

This is the 1st of many bridges to be redesigned. If all the rest overrun by the same time frame then it could throw the overhaul of the railway back by another year

Looking at the site this morning I would not be surprised if the works are not completed by the 1st September.
